One of the most prolific draughtsmen of the 19th century (over 2500 drawings by the artist are known) Jean-François Millet’s work shows his fascination with the harsh live of farmers and shepherds, which were often overlooked by artists from the time.
.
Millet’s interest in farming life has roots in his childhood, with the artist grew up in a farming village near Normandy. While his paintings of rural life initially gained success in the early 1850s, towards the end of the decade the social climate and taste changed, making it harder for the to artist find an audience for his paintings.
.
This prompted the artist to focus on producing drawings, for which he slowly developed a small circle of dedicated collectors.
