Known as “The Witch of Wall Street,” Hetty Green was worth today’s equivalent of about $2 billion. She lived in New York in the early 1900s and would often be seen walking down Wall Street in a black, faded, mourner’s dress. Green was born to a wealthy whaling family in 1834 and from a young age her father taught her how to handle money. By the time she was thirteen, she handled all of her family’s accounting. As an adult, she oversaw real estate deals, bought and sold railroads, and dealt in loans and foreclosures. Despite her enormous wealth, Green was extremely frugal, living in cheap housing without any extravagences.
