In 2017, we celebrated the historic victory of Danica Roem—the first openly trans-person to serve in state legislature. But, before Danica Roem, there was Althea Garrison: a closeted trans-person who served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in the 1990s. During her sole term, she was outed by a reporter—making her the first known transgender person in elected state office. Since then, Garrison has actually lost count of how many times she’s tried running for office again (it’s well over ten), becoming a local Massachusetts celebrity in the process. In honor of #WomensHistoryMonth, we're spotlighting lesser-known heroes—from recent and ancient history—who helped pave the way for other women.
