In honor of International Women's Day, I'm celebrating the fact that on a recent feature film we ended up with half our crew being female, after hiring the best people for each position. (Most are tagged in the photo!)
I'm also celebrating my new company Wildfire Pictures and arm Wildfire Capital, which so far, have an all-female executive team. I have had wonderful male associates and mentors, but this is where we're at. It's very effective and refreshing.
Now as a side conversation, because my mind is churning, I realized the reason more women aren't in leadership positions is more an issue of nurture than nature. It takes a level of confidence that is not supported from the beginning. I grew up with a strong single mom at first (a semi-present brilliant dad and a kind, genius-level and fully present step dad) and was debating whether to be a doctor, a fireman, a paleontologist, a nomad-horseback-riding artist, or the president. I sometimes forgot I was a girl other than anatomy telling me otherwise. There were zero gender discrepancies between my brother and me, as far as support and being allowed to dream big.
Fast forward to my political science class in college where I had to sit and listen to other women explaining why a woman shouldn't be president because of hormones. That is a big problem. That is a dis-ease. That is the same mentality within my own gender that is comparable to the reason I can sit in a meeting with a man, throw out an idea, get shut down, just to hear the same idea regurgitated in different words. The scary part is that it's subconscious. The beauty of this past year is that it has all come to the surface. We are all aware. There is no excuse.
I have lost deal after deal after deal in this crazy town because men thought it was valid to put sex on the table as a bargaining chip in business. Unfortunately for them, I have a temper like no one when it comes to that inequality. Unfortunately for me, I've been less than strategic and made plenty of enemies. The redeeming factor is that I'm not the only one. I'm not crazy. We are all in this together (humanity). We are starting to see each other and starting to be a lot more reasonable ✌?
