Victoria Woodhull was the first woman to run for president and that might just be the least fascinating thing about her. Born in rural Ohio. Woodhull believed that she could communicate with her three siblings who had died in infancy, so her father had her tell fortunes and contact spirits in a traveling show. When she moved to New York City in 1868, Victoria and her sister became personal clairvoyants to Cornelius Vanderbilt, who later gave them financial backing to open their own firm, making them Wall Street’s first female stockbrokers. In 1869, Woodhull attended a female suffrage convention and dedicated her life to the cause. Soon after she became the first woman to appear before a congressional committee to testify on behalf of women suffragists] A year later, she decided to run for president—before women were even given the right to vote—as part of the Equal Rights Party. In honor of #WomensHistoryMonth, we’re spotlighting lesser-known heroes—from recent and ancient history—who helped pave the way for other women.
