During World War II, the 588th Night Bomber Regiment was given a terrifying nickname by the Germans they were targeting: the Nachthexen, “Night Witches”. The all-female battalion flew wooden planes that flying more than 30,000 missions and dropped over 23,000 tons of bombs on Nazi targets. The squadron was dreamt up by Marina Raskova, who petitioned Joseph Stalin to let her create an all-female flying force. Stalin said yes, but gave them minimal resources: hand-me-down male uniforms, outdated planes, oversized boots. But they were more than able to make it work. In honor of #WomensHistoryMonth, we’re spotlighting lesser-known heroes—from recent and ancient history—who helped pave the way for other women.
