In the run-up to International Women’s Day tomorrow I thought I’d share this photograph depicting a celebration lunch for women who had received the Order of Maternal Glory in the Soviet Union. The award, created in 1944 by Joseph Stalin, was given in Soviet times to those women who had bore five or more children. Here in the village of Khuzhir, on Olkhon Island, some of the medal-winners gather for a celebratory dinner. In recent years the growth of a capitalist economy in Russia has contributed to drop in the birth rate and a historically low population (source: http://worldpopulationreview.com).
