With its splashed and spattered paint, ‘Number 21, 1950’ is a beautiful work from the peak of Jackson Pollock’s iconic ‘drip period’.
.
The painting was exhibited in the artist’s seminal 1950 solo show at the Betty Parsons Gallery, New York, which also included several of his greatest large-scale masterpieces painted that year – many of which are now in museum collections.
.
Katharine Arnold (@kalmarnold), our Director of Post-War and Contemporary Art in London, says: 'This is Jackson Pollock at his prime – the surface of “Number 21, 1950” is laden with drips of paint and radiates with a shimmering silver glow. It feels alive, kinetic – as if the artist himself were still present.'⠀
.
Jackson Pollock (1912–1956), ‘Number 21, 1950’, 1950. Enamel and aluminium paint on Masonite, 22 ¼ x 22 ¼ in. (56.5 x 56.5 cm.) Estimate: £10,000,000–15,000,000.⠀
