フィラデルフィア美術館のインスタグラム(philamuseum) - 2月25日 07時57分

Throughout his career, #JacobLawrence demonstrated a passionate interest in African American history and the struggle for racial equality, often exploring themes that were new to the history of Western art. This painting is exemplary of his trademark planar style and subject matter. Painted in vibrant colors, two pairs of interracial newlyweds pose in the manner of a traditional wedding portrait. However, as the painting’s title suggests, their weddings are an act of social transgression, since statutes forbidding interracial marriage were not federally outlawed until four years after this artwork was painted. #BlackHistoryMonth
