After being encouraged to travel through the French countryside for new inspiration, Chaïm Soutine visited the region of Cagnes-sur-Mer, in the South of France, in 1918.

‘Maison au bord de mer’ is a rich and expressive example of the artist’s landscapes from this period. Using swirling brushstrokes to capture the seaside town, Soutine creates the sense of movement and instability that later became integral to his art.
