Since the early-16th century, Chinese potters have produced porcelain specifically for export to the West. Porcelain dogs, in particular, reflected the European trend of depicting ‘man’s best friend’ in portraiture.

Certain dog breeds may also have been introduced to Europe in the early years of the export trade. Spaniels are thought to be a native East Asian breed that ultimately became status symbols in the West.

‘These cheerful pups had particular appeal to Peggy and David Rockefeller,’ said Elizabeth Seigel, our Decorative Arts specialist in New York.

Chinese export porcelain ‘was an early and continual passion’ for the couple, says our specialist. ‘Their 65th Street townhouse and Hudson Pines home were full of animal figurines, placed right where they could be seen and enjoyed every day.’
