Port Lockroy or Base ‘A’ is a former British research station on the Antarctic Peninsula, staffed by a team of adventurous volunteers over the summer and closed during the harsh, dark winter. It operates as a museum and post office and attracts visitors from passing cruise ships who queue to send postcards from this remote outpost. Lockroy also stocks a surprising range of books about Antarctica -the second picture shows a stock delivery at the beginning of the season. In the past Lockroy has served as a whaling harbour and scientific research station, some research continues into the gento penguins on the station’s doorstep.
