William H. Johnson (1901–1970) is one of the most inventive artists of his generation. Born in South Carolina, he traveled widely in Europe and North Africa, absorbing the popular visual styles of each region. While his early work is Impressionistic, he is best known for his folk style, which he developed when he returned to New York in the late 1930s. Focusing almost exclusively on African American subjects, his “consciously naïve” style is characterized by flat shapes and limited palettes. #BlackHistoryMonth
