The mountains here are the primary wind block in an otherwise mild topography of prairie, high desert and rolling hills. They take the brunt of any and all weather whipping across the surrounding oceans and northern landscape. The collision into the mountains pushes this wind turbulently down through the valleys, at times exceeding speeds of 100mph. The upside is that it makes for dramatically carved mountains and spectacular weather to photograph!
