“we face many difficulties in our work such as receiving severe cases, parents who don’t deal with their children in a good way because they don’t know how to, and of course we don’t blame them, the context they are living in, the geographical environment and the geographical areas are very basic for the refugees.” 39 year old Haha Hodroj is an Outreach Coordinator at the Family Guidance Centre, a multidisciplinary mental health facility which specializes in the prevention and treatment of developmental, psychological and psychiatric disorders. This facility serves children and adolescents primarily from the Palestinian populations of Lebanon and Syrians who have come to Lebanon following the conflict there.

Since 1948, displaced Palestinians have lived in camps in Lebanon. Today, nearly half a million people live in these camps where poverty and overcrowding is rampant. The prevalence of mental health conditions in such environments are extremely high. Some of the camps lack essential services, such as schools and healthcare facilities, which exacerbates problems. The trauma of living through war and the heavily militarized environment contributes to a disabling environment that can worsen or even cause mental health issues especially amongst children.
