Eclipses are fascinating. The Moon's orbit around the Earth combined with the Earth's orbit around the Sun means there are -at minimum- two lunar eclipses each year. They are relatively common. But this morning's eclipse was special. A Super Blue Blood Moon Eclipse. Last night was nearly a "Super Moon" meaning that the Moon had swung relatively close to the Earth in its elliptical orbit making it brighter and seem bigger than usual. It was the second full moon in January making it also a "Blue Moon." Lastly the moon entered the Earth's Umbra -its darkest shadow- so it seemed to turn red hence the "Blood" part. We had a thin band of clouds at the horizon where I was this morning so the red glow faded into the dawn. Still it was a beautiful way to start the year.
