IMPORTANT FACT!!! I just learned that CONCENTRIC exercises (like a pull up) strengthen muscles. ECCENTRIC excercises (like slowly lowering yourself back down) strengthen the TENDONS (and muscles). If you strengthen only the muscles, you will put a huge strain on the weak tendon. To prevent tendonitis, do an equal amount of concentric and eccentric exercises. How slowly can you do a negative pull up?
