In honour of the heroic, inspirational and trailblazing Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, we look back to his powerful words spoken 50 years ago, which still resonate today. “White Americans must recognise that justice for black people cannot be achieved without radical changes in the structure of our society. The comfortable, entrenched, the privileged cannot continue to tremble at the prospect of change of the status quo. ... This is a multiracial nation where all groups are dependent on each other. ... There is no separate white path to power and fulfillment short of social disaster, that does not share power with black aspirations for freedom and human dignity." Martin Luther King Jr. was a fearless leader and advocate for those underrepresented and underserved. These powerful words challenge us to examine our belief systems, thoughts, actions and our own individual roles in modern society and history. Are we an apathetic, silent spectator, or an active, empathetic participant? Are we - with clarity and integrity - willing to have the important conversation about inclusion, equality and visibility that challenges the status quo? Amid all the conflict so many minorities face— inequality and injustice— we must remember that love, coupled with active and open dialogue, is the way to resistance and to revolution. When I think of where we as a nation hope to be 50 years from now, I hope for an inclusive world where the intention of innovation and progress is to connect us all as human beings. I dream of a compassionate and empathetic world where we all unite to overcome adversity together, to build a stronger community. I wish for a thoughtful and conscious world, aware of the responsibility to impact the planet positively for future generations. So together, let’s ask ourselves, as Martin Luther King Jr. did 50 years ago, “Where Do We Go From Here?,” and together let’s work to find a resolution, so that the death of this inspiring hero was not in vain. #pgworld #pginspiration #martinlutherkingjr
