ミラノ、夕方5時。取材から戻って来たら、ベッドの上に白い袋が……。あれ？と思って見てみたら手紙に「DIEGO DELLA VALLE」という文字が……。え？ 嘘でしょ？ なんと僕が長年愛用しているイタリアのラグジュアリーブランド「TODS（トッズ）」の会長ディエゴ・デッラ・ヴァッレさんからの誕生日プレゼントでした。ディエゴさんは、僕が20年尊敬し続けているイタリアの大師匠。装いはもちろん、言動、ライフスタイル、センス、あたたかさ、優しさ、大きさ、すべてが本当に素敵なんです！ クラシックエレガンスを熟知しながらも、リラックスさせる感じこの優雅な佇まい。ネクタイをせずに胸元にシルクのスカーフをするこのスタイルは、ディエゴスタイルの真骨頂なんです。プレゼントの中身は、まさかのそのシルクのスカーフだったんです。しかも、黒の無地とネイビーのペイズリー柄の2枚。実はこのスカーフ、ディエゴさんが来日された時にお話していたものなんです。「いつも素敵ですね。そのスカーフはどこのものですか？」とお聞きした時に……。「これはシルク素材。ナポリのものなんですよ。干場さんもきっと似合うんじゃないかな！」とおっしゃってた、まさにそのスカーフでした。普通、こういう場合、自社製品をプレゼントするのが当たり前だと思うんですが……。まったく関係ないブランドをプレゼントをして頂けるなんて……。なんて心憎い演出。ディエゴさんのことは、勝手にイタリアの父と呼んでいるんですが……。今日こそ本当に息子にならせていただく決意をしました（笑） 早速、今夜のディナーにしていきます。お父さん本当にありがとうございました。またすぐにお会い出来ますように！ ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■
