Saada had been attending school in Adis Ababa, Ethiopia, when her family decided to marry her to an older boy from the neighborhood. She refused in fear of missing out on school, but her family informed her that she had no choice. Obediently, she sat through her own wedding. After a few days, she informed her husband that her education was her priority. He left her that week. For the past four years, Saada has been employed by a Saudi family as a domestic helper.
While following the stories of several women, I learned that some of the domestic helpers see themselves as mere workers and count the days until returning home. However, others see their duties as an escape from a worse scenario. Cleaning, cooking, and taking care of the children or the elderly are normal duties expected from them. But outside the daily occupational hours, they either become included in the family, or attacked as a scapegoat for every problem that arises, as soon as their arrival. ⠀

I realize that whatever their reasoning or outcome to have migrated to a different country, I'm witnessing an act of resilience that is shared by anyone leaving their home to earn a living.
