#JudyChicago first encountered china painting in the early 1970s when she noticed a beautifully painted plate in an antique store. Impressed by the technical sophistication involved in a medium that had traditionally been considered a hobbyist craft and “women’s work”, Chicago spent two years apprenticing with master china painters in order to become an expert in the techniques and artistic possibilities of the medium. In this set of ceramic plates, Chicago carefully charts her experiments with various glazes and palettes. #dinnerpartyroots ⠀
