Photo by @bethjwald // The warm, dry spell here in Colorado is continuing in this first week of January, and I am dreaming of snow-covered landscapes and icy winds, and remembering cold winter travels of the past. Nine years ago today, I started out from the end of the road in the Wakhan Corridor with a Wakhi guide named Malang, a couple yaks and local yak wrangler, on a month-long journey through the frozen mountain world of the Afghan Pamirs. The trip was part of a several year project to document the peoples of the Wakhan-the Wakhi and Kyrgyz, their ways of life on the roof of the world, their relationship to each other, to their environment and to the wildlife of the Pamirs. In this photo, our yaks climb a ridge above the Wakhan river, the first day on the trail after leaving from the village of Sarhad…I remember that day clearly, it was incredibly cold and as I was still acclimatizing to the altitude I couldn’t walk fast enough to warm up. We spent the first night in a cave by the river, and I remember thinking “what am I doing?!” But over the following days and weeks, the spectacular landscape, the good nature and humor of Malang, the warm hospitality of the Wakhi and Kygryz families that I stayed with and the privilege of spending time with them, all made it one of most special, otherworldly journeys I have ever made. As I was returning for the third time to the Afghan Pamirs, I was also able to re-connect with friends made several years ago, bring photos to families who have few such treasures and learn about how they survived the harsh winter. I will post several more photos from that journey this first week of the New Year, as I continue to hope for snow!
