@danielkaluuya isn’t waiting for your approval. During an interview in London, where @tom__jamieson took his portrait, the @getoutmovie star was in turn frank, guarded and intense: a movie star who hasn’t yet acquired the smooth sheen of the experienced interviewee. The 28-year-old has been acting since he was in his teens, but @getoutmovie has thrown him into an entirely new kind of spotlight. Which he’s sort of ignoring. “I am definitely not a household face, and I don’t expect to be one” he said firmly. “I don’t think you become a name with just one job.” Some might disagree. Born to Ugandan parents, @danielkaluuya grew up with his mother and an older sister on a council estate, the British equivalent of a housing project, in north London. Although he knew he had “caught the bug” for theater, he didn’t have the confidence to express a desire to act. “If you are from the estates, you don’t say that,” he said. “Actually, the biggest problem is that you don’t know it’s possible. You don’t have the vocabulary, conceptually, to articulate that wish.” The success of “Get Out” hasn’t immediately led to other roles, he said, but he’s thinking about a script he likes. Meanwhile, he isn’t exactly idle; he is writing a TV series, as well as a film. “It’s still a hustle!” he said cheerfully. “You crack on.”
