A 'Star' dune is special, like a 4 leaf clover, they only form under unique conditions. One of the only places in the US you can find them is the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. I used to think all Dunes were the same, a mass of sand blown around by wind without rhyme or reason. I couldn't have been more wrong. Radically symmetrical, Star Dunes only form in places where wind blows from varied directions over the course of a year. They are as complex as they are beautiful. I fought to get a unique perspective of these dunes from @shotsfromabove 's trike as we flew overtop. At one point I smelt plastic burning & realized I had leaned out so far that my down jacket hood was melting on the exhaust pipe... A little too close to my face for comfort. I got one aerial pass of this beauty.
