I fought back tears on the plane as I watched this spectacular movie. It paints an eye opening portrait of the average wartime Japanese, making huge personal sacrifices for their country and ultimately humiliated by their defeat. I recommend it to everybody (however it’s got a short Hiroshima aftermath scene that’s pretty graphic at the end)...
This movie has brought up many difficult questions as I prepare for my filming...
Do you think Japan’s relative silence of their wartime culture (and atrocities) as a whole is a defense mechanism much like the lengthy silence many of the Japanese Americans kept after having been release from the humiliating injustice of the camps?...
If there’s no good end to the sacrifices you’ve made, then is it really for nothing?.. How can we overcome the comfort of forgetting so that we can heal others who have been traumatized from our silence?..
These are some of the questions this beautiful movie has opened up in me, and I will be asking myself these during this trip for my own film. @omoiyari_songfilm
