This photo by @williamodaniels for@ナショナルジオグラフィック is part of the best photos of 2017 selected by the magazine’s photo editors. It was originally published in "Without a Home, and Without Hope," in August 2017, a story about Rohingya refugees living in southern Bangladesh.
Some Rohingya live outside the camps near Cox’s Bazar. This man lives in a settlement on the Bay of Bengal, near trees planted to prevent erosion and close to a hotel catering to tourists drawn by the beach. A few days after it was published a new outbreak of violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state caused more than six hundreds thousands of Rohingya civilians to flee to Bangladesh.
