#AugusteRodin began to collect antiquities in 1893 and eventually accumulated over 6,000 objects. He particularly admired the naturalism of ancient Greek sculpture and was inspired by fragmented figures that were missing arms or heads. When Rodin exhibited his own partial figures, they were criticized as “unfinished” but Rodin believed that a part could convey the essence of a larger whole. This radical reassessment of the meaning and form of sculpture, based in his study of antiquity, is fundamental to Rodin’s legacy as the first modern sculptor. #rodin100⠀
