Desert Solitaire. I was not familiar with this iconic autobiography book by Edward Abbey (1968) until a recent visit to Utah’s Arches National Park, where desert becomes a rock wonderland where the stars touch the Earth. This photo is a tribute to Abbey who wrote his experiences as a park ranger here in late 1950s, A Season in the Wilderness. He later became a voice for environmental issues and public land.
Here the Milky Way from Cygnus (bottom) to Cassiopeia appears in the sky. A gentle moonlight illuminates the ground. The North America Nebula is faintly visible near the center, next to bright star Deneb. Andromeda Galaxy, the Milky Way’s grand neighbor, is on the upper left, easily visible to the naked eye in a sky like this.
