Video by @Joel Sartore | Javanese black-winged starlings like this one at Wildlife Reserves Singapore (@wrs.ig) were once abundant throughout Indonesia, but they're now listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Over the past three generations this bird has experienced an extremely rapid decline due mainly to capture for the pet trade. This species is highly prized as a cage-bird in Java, where the market is enormous.
Currently, these birds are nominally protected by law and two conservation projects are ongoing in Java in order to breed and reintroduce them to the wild. More research to promote strict and widespread enforcement of capture and trade regulations has been proposed.
