Image by @beverlyjoubert. Ears notched, horn cut, blindfolded and pulled by ropes. It looks like an abduction scene but is in fact a rescue. This is one of the latest rhinos to be moved from a poaching hotspot to safety with #RhinosWithoutBorders. In South Africa a rhino is killed for its horn every 7 hours. Despite millions being spent on anti-poaching security, populations are beginning to decline and there seems to be no end to the relatively sudden appetite for rhino horn that is driving this poaching. Rhino horn is only useful to a rhino. It has no medicinal value at all and yet daily, rangers and anti-poaching units find grisly scenes of dead – or still dying rhinos. The plan is to move 100 rhinos to undisclosed areas in Botswana, a country with the lowest levels of poaching in Africa. Each rhino has a unique pattern notched on its ears so as to be easily identifiable at a distance. Their DNA has been added to a database and satellite trackers are fitted so that each can be continuously monitored. They have travelled by truck, aeroplane and helicopter to reach this safer land and they’re ready for release. It’s a huge operation and a very expensive one. But thanks to the generosity of thousands of people, and the hard work and pure dedication of the Rhinos Without Borders team, these rhinos, who reached their new home in the cool night time, takes the total number relocated to 77. There are just 23 more rhinos to move. To find out more, please visit rhinoswithoutborders.com. #GivingTuesday #ItTakesAlotToSaveARhino #23RhinosToGo
