21 years ago today, our #CaroleeSchneemann retrospective opened.
In the exhibition text, the curator asked that Schneemann's work "not be read as an effort to convey a nostalgic point of view of the art world of the 60s and 70s, nor even of the artist’s unique role with in it." Instead, he hoped that the exhibition would address the exclusivity of the art world, as well as its resistance to "transgressive" art.
Schneemann joins Ragnar Kjartansson in conversation next weekend as part of our 40th anniversary celebration.
