Pictured here is an Egungun masquerade ensemble representing an Egun (ancestral spirit) called Babá Xangô (artist unknown). The ensemble is made up of cloth, beads, cowrie shells and mirrors. Though not embedded with spiritual properties, the work of Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa came to mind. Currently on view in "A Universal History of Infamy," the piece "El corazón del espantapájaros (Heart of the Scarecrow)" shows a number of ensembles also made up of different materials. They are costumes based on a play by the same name Guatemalan playwright Hugo Carrillo; these are activated for the performance by five L.A.-based performers working under the direction of the artist. Among the figures included is a cardinal. #PSTInstaSwap #PSTLALA #MuseumInstaSwap @fowlermuseum
