#MovementMondays Kumail Nanjiani is a Pakistani-American stand-up comedian, actor, writer, and podcast host. Born and raised in a strict Muslim household in Pakistan, Nanjiani moved to the U.S. at the age of 18 to attend Grinnell College in Iowa, where he double majored in Computer Science and Philosophy. He stayed in the States to pursue his comedy career. Nanjiani is best known for starring on HBO’s Emmy Award-nominated series Silicon Valley, where he actually plays a computer programmer. He has also had roles on TNT’s Franklin & Bash, Adult Swim’s Newsreaders, and IFC’s Portlandia. His voice can be heard on Emmy Award-winning animated series Adventure Time and in the podcasts The Indoor Kids and The X-Files Files. When starting in comedy, Nanjiani was always confronted with racism and was hesitant of incorporating his background into his stand up but he told USA Today, “over time, "I was like, 'There's a big part of myself that I'm not talking about onstage.' It felt disingenuous," he says. "Like, if I want to be personal onstage, this is a part of me that I have to talk about. It doesn't mean I have to talk about it in a stereotypical way; it means that I can talk about it in an experiential way." This past summer, Nanjiani co-wrote/starred in The Big Sick, a romantic comedy loosely based on his real love story with his wife Emily V. Gordon who wrote alongside him. The story follows a modern interracial couple that has to deal with their cultural differences especially as Kumail struggles to tell his parents he is no longer religious. In January 2017, the film had its premiere at Sundance and went to theaters in July. The Big Sick has become one of the most critically acclaimed films and highest grossing independent films of 2017.
