Petrona Vasguez holds a large bouquet of marigolds cut from the field in her yard on the first day of Dia de Los Muertos or Day of the Dead in the small Mexican community of Atzompa, near the city of Oaxaca. Today is the third and final day of the celebration. Marigolds are the traditional flower used to honor the dead in Mexico. She will sell them at the gates of Atzompa Cemetery in the small community of the same name for people to decorate the graves of their loved ones in the cemetery. Celebrated across the country, this annual multi-day holiday brings family members to cemeteries throughout the country in remembrance of their loved ones who have passed. The gravesites are cleaned and decorated with marigolds in a ritual that celebrates the memory of those who have passed to support their spiritual journeys. For three days people bring food and mezcal, a kind of tequila, as well as blankets and chairs for spending the night visiting with one another and celebrating the life of the person as they keep vigil. It coincides with the Western Christianity celebration of All Saints Eve, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day. There are festivals, parades, and three days of people wearing costumes. Family build altars in their homes laden with marigolds, candles, and food to their loved ones who have passed. @guggfellows2017 #mexico #oaxaca #dayofthedead #diadeslosmuertos #atzompa #cemetery #ngmwomanofvision
