Guy Le Querrec shares an early photographic moment in Africa. The signed print is available for $100, but only until 6pm EST today (Nov 3). Link in bio. “Africa is the continent which we, my Leica and I, have traveled and photographed most. In fact, I had my eye there before having gone. It was in Paris, in the movie theatre in my neighborhood, that I first encountered the film “Mogambo” by John Ford. I was 14. A profound desire to find myself one day in Sub-Saharan Africa was instilled in me. But it was close to 15 years later before this dream was realized. At the beginning of my career, I was working for the magazine Jeune Afrique, and in August 1969, I was doing my first story in Chad. It was Monday, August 6, precisely that the first exposures of my first roll of film were made. Extremely intimidated, I hardly dared to approach, not venturing to trigger my Leica, though silent in its nature. A very touching scene presented itself: I saw three young children passing on a mission to transport wood and coal in baskets on their heads. They followed their route with serenity, without lending the least bit of attention to my uncomfortable presence. It was many years later that I mentioned to George Rodger and his wife Jinx my admiration for his work on Africa and his solid and powerful images of the robust Nuba. And I recounted my first photographic moments in the company of these three small boys, who had helped my eye take its first African steps. They remain very present in my memory. What have they become 48 years later?” PHOTO: Chad, Central Africa. Wednesday, August 6, 1969. © #GuyLeQuerrec/#MagnumPhotos #blackandwhitephotography #MagnumPhotos70
