We’ve got another frightening and fascinating species for you this All Hallows' Eve! Here’s a look at the basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus), the world’s second largest fish, which can grow up to 40 feet long. One of its most prominent features is its big, gaping mouth—which, at a closer look, contains relatively tiny teeth. This giant feeds passively on plankton, which it catches with highly developed bristle-like gill rakers that extend between the gill arches visible inside its mouth. This shark gets its name because of the way it feeds, “basking” at the surface of the ocean, with its dorsal fin poking out of the water.
