While the okapi (Okapia johnstoni) bears a glancing resemblance to zebras thanks to its striped legs and rear, this endangered mammal is actually more closely related to the giraffe—and wasn’t known to the scientific world until 1901. Like their long-necked cousins, okapi have long tongues that can reach both their eyes and ears (but are most often used to pick leaves and buds from trees). They also use signals that humans can’t detect: okapi mothers use infrasonic calls—sounds that are below our range of hearing—to communicate with their calves. Say what now?!
