On the eve of the 100 year anniversary of their indestructible Chore Coat, Carhartt asked myself (photographer Elliot Ross @elliotstudio ) and writer Genevieve Allison @gennyallison to sit down with folks that have done hard work their entire life and achieved the incredible feat of living past their 100th birthday—surviving members of "the greatest generation” that both fought for and built much of the nation we sometimes take for granted. We wanted to learn first hand what work means to them and how they’ve seen the workplace (and the world) evolve over the decades. You may have seen over the past week some of the photographs that have been trickling out from the project. I’m thrilled to say that we’ve completed the journey and are now beginning to make sense of it all. Thanks for following along. • Les Fritz, 102, embodies grit. A life led on the windswept plains of North Dakota and winters that resemble those "North of the Wall." This is a man who till 1970 mined his own coal out of principle but described the day they got electricity as "wonderful." Les enlisted to do his part in WWII and was then honorably discharged within a few weeks, he was too old he tells us, chuckling. His kids also glow when recalling memories of their childhood. "He was the most awesomest dad," his daughter Connie tells us, "He wasn't a disciplinarian, he always led by example." Les has since moved off the farm and is, begrudgingly, living a comfortable life in an assisted living home that he made clear isn't for him. He'd much rather be out there in the elements, fighting the daily battles. I asked Les what hard work meant to him. He looked at me, puzzled and shrugged, "Well, hard work means everyday life." • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • #Carhartt #portrait #Dakotas #SouthDakota #outworkthemall #100yearsofchorecoat #grit #centenarian #100yearsold #100
