Out on the cracked tarmac of the old Willow Run Airport where thousands of medium and heavy bombers like this B-17 were built in war-time haste, Sergeant Preston Jowers admires for the first time in years the plane that he helped protect. "You see, the Americans were losing the war. The bombers were getting shot down in huge numbers over Germany." And that's where the Tuskegee Airmen come into the picture. Battling racial discrimination at home and fascism abroad, the men in their red-tailed fighters were the nation's first all-black aviation unit. They ferociously defended the bombers and reversed the tides. Jowers recalls the air force was losing up to 60 bombers a mission, after the Tuskegee came into service, for the rest of the war, only three were lost. "I am so happy and so proud, and I thank god that I’ve lived in this world for these many years (he's 102), able to talk, experience and see a difference in it than it was when I came along as a kid..."
