The same black and white squares as a chessboard or on the side of a taxi in NYC- it was in #1970’s England that it had its entire connotation upheaved and was licensed with new meaning. A far more profound and honourable significance beyond its initial graphic appeal. In honour of ‘Too Much Too Young’ turning 38 today- we take a look into the origins of Two-Tone and the iconic print. As it sluggishly crept into eighties, #Britain for the most part was pretty austere- #Thatcher was climbing to power, the economy was in decline and industry was depressed. Despondent, people took power where they could, such as protest through #Punk. But when that burnt out- as brightly and quickly as it appeared- people were looking to #PostPunk for a follow up. One man saw this moment as true and rare opportunity to not only initiate a band- but an entire movement that could better the world. From a young age, #JerryDammers had been exposed to more of the world than many of his contemporaries- the son of an Anglican Dean, he was born in South India before relocating to the city he would always be connected with, #Coventry. Obsessing from one scene to the next- Jerry phased through being a #Mod, then a #Hippie before settling on #Skinhead. Culture in the war torn city was rich- the sounds of #Ska, #Reggae and #Dancehall had travelled well with immigrants from the #Caribbean and the youth of Coventry were in full appreciation. Influencing their dress, sound and attitude- #GraemeMcIver writes that it was here that ‘Jerry Dammers and his friends began the process of combining the raw energy of punk with the dance rhythms of #Jamaican Ska’. But not just for music- but in a way for the greater good of society.
