Underground – a sub-culture champion that was born out of a love of renegade style

Our Manchester store had opened in 1981 and in those first few years we put together an offering of footwear that served the sub cultures that abounded in the city at that time. It was as much about curation and stewardship as it was about design. Taking iconic styles, often neglected or forgotten and giving them new life. By the mid-eighties the offering was taking shape into what we might tag a “collection” and by 1987 the time had come to present Underground to a wider audience. The collection was made up of three ranges- Creepers, Winklepickers and Steel Caps. Each of the styles were modelled on classic shapes, original lasts and the soles were purposefully selected or created by Underground. Some of the styles in the collection were based on classic designs that had been long over looked and many of those were contemporised, Steel cap Boots, once the functional footwear in working cities were updated with new leathers, Creepers, s style that had been largely forgotten were revitalised and championed, and have been since, by Underground. The Winklepicker with its sharp toe was similarly given a new meaning and story.

The Original Collection was created specifically for our overseas market. Since 87 the collection has been added to and updated but typically for the brand that takes authenticity and consistency seriously, those Original styles remain an important story for the brand.

Celebrating 30 years of the Originals collection this year we are kicking off the story on IG with the classic Wulfrun Creeper. In the coming month we will be highlighting the Originals and at the same time fusing those with the new designs and products that make up our brand. For the Creepers we have got some special pieces coming up, limited editions, archive pieces on display in our store and we are marking the anniversary through an extra special collaboration that will be announced soon.
