The film centers on trans activist Marsha P. Johnson. Active in New York between 1963 and 1992, Johnson (known to her circle as “Saint Marsha”) was a cult figure in the downtown gay community, part of the performance troupe Hot Peaches, and a cofounder, with Sylvia Rivera, of STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries).
