?:#hyungjeesong Home for us has been #Soho for 25 years. The former years being on #CarnabyStreet, just in time for the second wave of popularity that a-washed the street with #CoolBritannia in the late #90’s. Now you can find us nestled in #BerwickStreet- a spiritual home of British music. Whether you’re a home-grown local, or have never been to Soho in your life- you know the scene we’re setting. You know all about the coffee shop tables spewing into the street; the colourful characters singing at the top of their lungs that no one bats an eye at; the humming red, pink and purple neon lights fronting blacked out windows and beaded curtains; the cavernous, mahogany lined drinking haunts next door to the once-chic-now-grimy-but-always-loved clubs and cocktail bars boasting Slippery Nipple shots. Of course, it is most famed for its reputation and red light district. At its peak between 1976-1982 it’s recorded that ‘Soho had 54 sex shops; 39 sex cinemas and cinema clubs; 16 strip and peep shows; 11 sex-orientated clubs, and 12 licensed massage parlours’. Naturally, due to a series of bellicose regeneration plans, the district is far more PC than a decade ago. A few gems of the sex industry remain- but thankfully it still stands as one of Britain’s most defying hubs of creativity, independency and individuality. This status would not have maintained had it not been for the red light district. The open, disreputable nature of the sex and party trades allowed for a casual acceptance of the lurid, sordid and candid behaviours. Every weirdo could fit in here- nothing was too ‘out-there’. Which made it the perfect stomping ground for each generations most courageous and inventive names- from #FrancisBacon to the #RollingStones. Famed Agony Aunt #IrmaKurtz wrote a beautiful description of Soho as bohemia: ‘We use the word “bohemia” very easily but what it meant to me was an area where the affluent mix with the poor, where the gay mix with the straight, where long ago women could mix with men and be listened to.
