‘It’s behind the cathedral!’ As we have veered into many times over the past few weeks, the early eighties in #Manchester was a disorientating moment for the city- but that disorientation allowed it to bloat with a cross-bred creativity. And it’s within this picture that #Underground found its purpose and journey. If we were to reduce the unique cultural phenomena that arose from the late 70’s / early 80’s in Manchester into a physical ‘bricks and mortar’ manifestation, it would be #Pipsnightclub. The dance floor itself is the perfect representation and analogy for the #zeitgeist that set the city apart at that time from anywhere else in the world. We all know #theBlitz, #theRoxy, #theHaçienda. All legendary establishments that have made history textbooks for crafting a space for subcultures to experiment, gather and revel. But ten years before the Hacienda, #Pips that opened in 72 helped transform, not only Manchester, but also sub/culture across the world. The part that really made Pips was the fact the club was comprised of several rooms- all offbeat to one another. This allowed for a whole coalescence of various youth cultures, listening to their favourite tunes under one roof. Up until this point, as long as subcultures had been around, they had not wanted to be around each other. Gang-like and territorial- city centres and venues especially were divvied up into segregated subcultural stomping grounds. It was like this in all cities- but not Manchester. And certainly not Pips. The club itself was split into many rooms, each a dark, crowded cave, that were individually themed and enshrined- each room jammed to it’s own music and each dance floor soon became the temple to the associated subculture. #NewRomantics, #Goths, #FootyCasuals, #Punks, #PostPunks, #Glam rockers- all tearing up their own corner of the dance floor. Though it reportedly did get a little tense at times between the groups- apparently to get to most of the alternative rooms you had to make a break for it, eyeliner, heels, lace, leather and all, through the ‘#Perry’ lads- #footballcausals- listening to mainstream music dressed in Lacoste in the main room.
