Mizusashi, or water containers, are used by tea masters for refilling the kettle and cleaning bowls in Chanoyu, the Japanese tea ceremony. This mizusashi, created by Kawai Kanjirō, was made with Shigaraki clay, which has a coarse texture that results in a pitted surface. Kawai was associated with the Japanese folk art movement and is known for constantly experimenting with glazes and clays. “Lidded Mizusashi,” c. 1962–65, by Kawai Kanjirō
