The Museum’s front doors open onto an ancient battle between predator and prey: a hypothetical scene of an 80-foot-long Barosaurus rearing up to protect its young from an attacking Allosaurus. Originally displayed on a single platform, the two combatants were split by an 8-foot pathway in 2010, and now visitors can walk through the primordial contest on their way in. The Barosaurus is the world’s tallest free-standing mount, and true to its scientific name--which means “heavy lizard”--the fossils are too heavy to support in this way. The real sauropod bones are in the Museum’s collection, and the exhibit is built from casts. #amnh #insideamnh #barosaurus #allosaurus #dinosaurs #dinosaur #fossil #fossils
