The massive jaws of the Tyrannosaurus rex contained 60 teeth, some of which were 6 inches long (12 inches with the root). The teeth’s sharp, serrated edges indicate that this carnivorous theropod was an active predator, with a fearsome bite and powerful jaws that could have easily torn through the roof of a car (à la Jurassic Park)--but in its own time, may have crushed bone, letting T. rex extract nutritious marrow. T. rex didn’t chop or grind its food; it swallowed chunks whole, and its lower jaw had a joint midway through that may have helped it absorb some of the shock generated by struggling prey. Deep recesses on the serrations of T. rex teeth may have been a breeding ground for bacteria, adding toxicity to an already-gruesome bite. #trex #tyrannosaurusrex #dinosaurs #fossil #fossils #amnh #insideamnh #teeth #dinosaur #jurassicpark
