@bysarahkhan has lived in 5 countries on 3 continents. But she’d never properly explored the United States. Soon after she returned to U.S. from a 4-year stint as an expat in South Africa, President Trump began his term by announcing a travel ban on certain Muslim-majority countries: there have been several iterations of it since. As a Muslim American immigrant, @bysarahkhan wondered, “Am I just a few 140-character proclamations away from having my citizenship revoked?” So she set off on a road trip to places that felt foreign to her. She danced along to cover bands at Tootsie’s and Robert’s Western World in Nashville and wore a red, white and blue cowboy hat while trying her hand at riding a mechanical bull in Cody, Wyoming. She also visited @yellowstonenps in Wyoming. “The frontier has always intrigued me, but from a safe, playing-Oregon-Trail-in-a-computer-lab kind of distance,” she writes. But @bysarahkhan and her travel partner, Sobia, also a Muslim-American woman, “battled peak summer crowds to see blindingly white hot springs, steaming pools whose kinetic colors resemble semiprecious gemstones in liquid form, and one particularly unreliable geyser.” Here, photographer @janie_osborne captured the Midway Geyser Basin in all its cantankerous, natural glory.
