In @themayorabc, a new comedy series that premieres next Tuesday, @brandonmichealhall plays Courtney Rose, a struggling rapper who runs for mayor of a small Northern California town in an ill-considered scheme to get the word out about his mixtape. Free publicity, no risk of actually winning — what could go wrong? Of course, Courtney does win, much to everyone’s surprise. Had @brandonmichealhall ever been in a similar predicament? “I’m actually having that experience right now,” he told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter Robert Ito. In a Cinderella story that mirrors his character’s, this is the 24-year-old’s first leading role in a series. Brandon was born and raised in Anderson, South Carolina, where racism was “bled into the soil,” he said. But even so, he found the place comforting. “You go to the church your grandma went to, that your great-grandma went to,” he said. He grew up in a trailer park with his mom, a preacher — “my dad wasn’t in the picture growing up,” he said — and his older sister.
