The rocky shorelines, shifting deserts and winding canyons of the United States’s 59 national parks have been hallmarks of American vacations for generations, writes our reporter @fotojulie. But the number of park visitors has reached an unprecedented level, leaving many tourists frustrated and many environmentalists concerned about the toll of overcrowding. In 2016, the @nationalparkservice tracked a record 331 million visits; this year, after a busy summer, the system is likely to surpass that number. Shuttle buses are filled like sweaty subway cars. Selfie-takers clog parks. And at the top of one iconic trail, some portable toilets were marked off with a sign: “Due to extreme use, these toilets have reached capacity.” @fremson, a @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer, documented the gridlock of sightseers in August. Swipe left to see more of her photos. Then, tell us: Have you visited one of the #nationalparks in the last year or so? If so, where, and what was your experience like?
